New NIH Biographical Sketch Format

Effective May 2021, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) made key changes to the biographical sketch format. The significant changes include:

  • Section A is expanded to include ongoing and completed research from the past three years, if applicable to the subject.

  • Section B, formerly Positions and Honors, is changed to Positions, Scientific Appointments, and Honors. Scientific appointments include both domestic and foreign as well as any academic, professional, or institutional appointments regardless of compensation.

  • For Non-Fellowship biographical sketches, Section D on scholarly activity is removed.

NIH also reminded researchers that Other Support is inclusive of those resources made available to a researcher regardless of economic value or the institution the researcher identifies for the current grant. Other Support is not inclusive of training awards, prizes, or gifts. Items or services given in return for a time commitment are considered an in-kind contribution and should be classified as Other Support.

More information and instructions can be found on the NIH website:

The TriService Nursing Research Program (TSNRP) will look to adopt the new format in 2022.
